Dyslexia Awareness

It’s Dyslexia Awareness Month.

This is a month that brings to light a challenge that approximately 5 million people in Canada have, and an estimated 750,000 are school age children.

“Children who are struggling readers and don’t get intervention do not get better.” - Dr. Eldo Bergman

It is crucial that we teach children in a way that takes the science of reading seriously.  The results when we don’t, can have a negative impact as they grow into adults.  The Right to Read inquiry found that, “Adults with dyslexia told the inquiry about long-term effects of not learning to read, such as mental health and substance abuse issues and negative impacts on their employment.” -OHRC Report

NILD Educational Therapy has always adhered to what the Human Rights Inquiry into the Right to Read has now concluded.

“Approaches to teaching early reading that build skills for decoding words and language comprehension have been proven to work best for all students, and are essential for many students.” - OHRC Report

Every child should be taught to read in a way that follows what we know about the science of reading. And there is hope for all students, including adults.  It is never too late to find support and take the steps to learn or improve reading.

“One thing we know for certain about Dyslexia, is that this is one small area of difficulty in a sea of strengths.” - Dr Sally Shaywitz

Roots of Learning is happy to support you or your student discover confidence in reading.

“Dyslexic kids are creative, ‘outside-the-box’ thinkers. They have to be, because they don’t see or solve problems the same way other kids do.”

- Rick Riordan
